Ganga Dussehra is one of the most sacred festivals dedicated to Maa Ganga, the divine river who descended from heaven to Earth to liberate the souls of King Bhagiratha’s ancestors. This holy occasion is also known as Gangavataran, meaning “the descent of the Ganga.”
According to ancient scriptures, Maa Ganga was originally present in the Kamandal of Lord Brahma. When King Bhagiratha performed intense penance for the salvation of his forefathers, the celestial river agreed to descend upon Earth. To control her powerful flow, Lord Shiva held Ganga in his matted locks before allowing her waters to flow across the land, bringing purity, life, and spiritual cleansing to humanity.
On this auspicious day, devotees worship Goddess Ganga, perform Ganga Snan, offer charity, and pray for freedom from sins and negative karma. It is believed that taking a holy dip in the Ganges on Ganga Dussehra washes away ten types of sins and grants divine blessings.
Thousands of devotees gather at sacred places like Varanasi, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Prayagraj to participate in Ganga Aarti and holy rituals.
